ABOUT EXHIBITION
In honor of Black History Month (Feb) and Women’s History Month (Mar), Warehouse 416 art gallery in Oakland proudly presents: “In Search of Sheba: Black Women Artists 2014.”

Black female artists are often underrepresented in local galleries, yet their work speaks with passion and universal emotional impact. Wire sculpture, acrylic and watercolor painting, textile fashion, videography, photography, pen and ink drawing and découpage are some of the mixed media with which the Sheba artists express their vision.

This exhibition is inspired by the legend of Makeda, the Queen of Sheba, whose immense wealth, intelligence, beauty and sense of adventure made her an international celebrity in ancient times. Although a woman, Makeda successfully ruled the resource-rich Land of Sheba (present-day Ethiopia, Eritrea, Yemen, Egypt and Arabia). Her legendary diplomatic visit to King Solomon of Judea was breathlessly recorded in Yemeni and in the Ethiopian holy book, (the Kebra Nagast) and in Kenyan and Nigerian traditions. Her fame spread worldwide through by ancient Roman accounts, the Old Testament of the Bible and the Holy Qur’an; worldwide, tales of the Queen of Sheba are taught in Christianity, Judaism and Islam.

The 12 artists in this exhibition are each “queens” in their own realms. Like Makeda, they are rich with intellect, beauty, bravery and creativity. “In Search of Sheba” is a snapshot of each artist at this stage in her artistic journey.

“In Search of Sheba: Black Women Artists 2014″ is the 4th in a popular series of Black History Month exhibitions presented by Warehouse 416, one of the original Oakland Art Murmur galleries. The exhibition is co-curated by Warehouse 416′s Angela Scrivani, with Guest Curator Pamela Mays McDonald, a former Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco director and current member of the Oakland Art Murmur Board of Directors.

**Join us for a Pre-opening Reception 6-9 pm Saturday, Feb 1 to experience the show in its entirety before the crowds arrive for First Friday on Feb 7. Meet the artists and curators while you enjoy wine, refreshments, live music and dance performances.

And of course, we hope you will be inspired to support these local artists and this family-owned, local small business by bringing home a piece of art for your home or office–or as a gift.

TAXING

How do taxes make you feel? Frustrated? Clammy? Cringy? Horrified?
Yep… us too.
We all want to avoid taxes, right?
But HA! We can’t.
At Warehouse416, we understand this, so in our deeply twisted wisdom, our new show…
TAXING is going to actually make the whole taxes disaster fun!
Yes!
Avoid your taxes for ONE MORE DAY and come to our show
check out the art, play games & have a drink with us
.

We’re gonna have 3 awesome games:
“It’s Deductible” - Visit our treasure table and purchase something AMAZING that’ll be tax deductible next year! Each purchase comes with its very own tax deduction form, so you’re totally covered! All proceeds go to the Oakland Fund for the Arts, so you know you’re going straight to heaven!

“Expression Wall” - How do taxes make you feel? We want to know! Express your badass self on the expression wall. Perhaps you’d like to write a haiku. Draw a bomb exploding? Play hangman with your boss’s name! It’s all possible this Friday!

“Free Drink Return” - You know you want a return this year, so roll the dice, pick up sticks, and maybe hit Uncle Sam in the face with a coupla darts, while you navigate our homemade federal return form. Fill that sucker out right, to earn yourself a free drink, and believe me, you’re gonna need it.

JODY MEDICH Artists Statment: I am drawn to marks, and the act of mark making. Humans are always leaving marks. I am interested in narratives. Explicit and implied. Humans are always telling stories. I believe in the craft of making. I am from a Mid-western, Blue Collar world. The skill of making is an almost primal requirement. These three values are always present in my work in a diverse landscape of mediums and contexts. They are the constant.

Melanin AKA Deadeyes Bay Area Public Artist who has been interacting with the streets of Oakland 16 years. Bringing together a mix of Oceanic and 1st world Art with modern design. The juxtaposition of his line work tells the tapestry of Bay Area’s Cultural soup.

Maria Fatima Urbi
A dreamer and an idealist, Maria likes to go where the wind goes, and is usually discontent with the practical conventions of the everyday hustle and bustle. Making art grounds her to the earth, gives her the platform to express, and creates a dialogue with herself. Her experience traveling and growing up overseas has been the main catalyst in her work—the different cultures, stories, the colors, the smell, the grit, and grind. She found her comfort (and discomfort ) in acrylics, inks, pens and watercolors, as her weapons of creation, illustrating her own personal journey in this microcosm called Life.

Money raised during The Box will be donated to Women’s Initiative for Self Employment: Inspiring High-Potential, Low-Income Women Entrepreneurs. www.womensinitiative.org

Special thank you to LESLIE CERAMIC for the generous clay and glaze donation. www.leslieceramics.com

ABOUT THE BOX INSTILLATION:
Warehouse416 and a group of women artists have created an art installation inspired by Judy Chicago’s feminist opus ‘The Dinner Party’. In a series of group workshops, participants sculpted ceramic ‘vagina portraits’ in the form of bowls to honor women in history or women they know and are inspired by. A separate group of women worked together to create textile-based place settings that include embroidery, sewing, and painting. The work sits on a box-shaped table.
At the opening reception on March 12th 2011, Warehouse416 will display the completed table with 20 bowls and textiles.

WAYS TO DONATE:
All proceeds from this project will be donated to Women’s Initiative for Self Employment. www.womensinitiative.org
SILENT AUCTION: Ongoing, from now until March 23rd. All of the bowls and textiles are being auctioned off in a silent auction posted at the gallery. You can view the items HERE as well as bid. The Vagina Monologues is a painfully funny, poignant, and provocative exploration of international female experiences. The show is simple: 16 monologues about all-things-vagina, based on activist Eve Ensler’s interviews with over 200 women. You will laugh, you will wince, you will be angry, and hopefully you will leave inspired.

ABOUT THE CAUSE
All donations benefit our two spotlights, including activist efforts in Haiti and here in Oakland through Bay Area Women Against Rape (BAWAR).

V-Day is a global movement to end violence against women and girls that raises funds and awareness through benefit productions of Playwright/Founder Eve Ensler’s award winning play The Vagina Monologues and other artistic works.

CLICK HERE to view blog for Vagina Monologues East Bay.
